Two films and done? The cliffhanger which closes the second part inevitably leaves its viewer with a taste of unfinished business! So, will there be a 3rd film after D’Artagnan and Milady?
Asked about the subject, director Martin Bourboulon answers us: “The ending pays homage to Dumas’ writing. That is to say, he has always conceived his work as something breathless, serial, which advances all the time. We were keen to do this all the time.
There’s not a lot of downtime. Sequences have a function. The characters are regularly animated by something. The counter-rhythms, when they exist, are quite lively and they have their strength because we are in a rhythm.
When it stops a little, when there is silence, it gains more strength. The end first pays homage to that, because we also have fun reproducing what Dumas did long before us.”
It’s the spectator who will decide!
And added: “Today, we are all aligned on the same thing. That is to say, we loved doing all this work together. I found it an incredible experience to be able to work with so many actors, to direct this story, to make these two films.
Now, ten days before the release, it’s impossible to say that there will be a third. It is the spectator who will decide for himself and we will first wait to see how he will receive this one.”
Would the actors be ready to return for a new film or several? Eva Green answers us straight away: “Of course. First of all, the public has to like it. It’s really the public who will decide if they want us to continue the adventure.
But I would say yes right away. Obviously, if it is the same screenwriters who are tackling this third part because I find that they are extremely talented and that they have taken liberties compared to Dumas’ novels, but intelligent liberties“.
For the record, when the project for a new adaptation of The Three Musketeers was announced a little over three years ago, in November 2020, there was already talk that the film could go beyond a diptych.
In addition to starting work on the two films, the team of screenwriters was considering two other films “around the Three Musketeers who [feraient] the link with Vingt Ans Après and Le Vicomte de Bragelonne“, as well as a spin-off on one of the serial characters for television”.
If it is successful, new films could indeed see the light of day. The Three Musketeers D’Artagnan, the first part released last April, attracted 3.4 million spectators.
