USB-C for all iPhone 15 models? Probably. However, don’t expect higher transmission speeds than the Lightning port…

Do you think you know everything about the next iPhone? Well, know that these have obviously not finished surprising you. And not always in a good way, unfortunately.

USB-C should equip the next iPhones well, but…

Since last spring, the various indices seem to confirm the adoption of a USB-C port for the next iPhones. As a reminder, it is only from autumn 2024 that the new regulations established by the European Commission last year will come into force. In other words, it would theoretically give Apple an extra year to finally decide to abandon its Lightning port for good. That said, it seems that the iPhone 15 and 15 Pro will indeed be the first smartphones from the Apple brand to wear a USB-C port. Obviously, we won’t be long in getting to the bottom of it, as Apple’s keynote is only a stone’s throw away.

Remember, almost a year ago, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo mentioned on Twitter (now X.com) that the iPhone 15 could carry a restricted USB-C socket. Guess what ? This now seems to be confirmed.

… it will have the same limitations as the Lightning port

Last November, Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus models would both be equipped with a USB-C port limited to the 2.0 standard. At that time, this could already let us suggest that the adoption of this new connection would not necessarily be synonymous with better transfer speeds, compared to the Lightning port. The analyst still mentioned the possibility that future high-end Apple could marry the standard 3.2 or Thunderbolt 3.

Just yesterday, on X, user Majin Bu confirmed that the Cupertino company would indeed adopt the USB 2.0 standard for its iPhone 15. In effect, this would therefore mean that the devices would be limited to a speed of 480 Mbps. For comparison, the Thunderbolt 3 standard boasts transfer speeds of up to 40 Gbps. The iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max, on the other hand, may not be affected by this limitation, as Ming-Chi Kuo already claimed last year.

Still on X, our friend Majin Bu (who is definitely no longer under Babidi’s control) has somewhat loosened up on the information around the USB-C port of the iPhone 15. He tells us in particular that the cable, which should also match the color of your iPhone, should measure 1.6 meters in length and that the latter should be thicker and more resistant than traditional cables.

Apple iPhone 14

  • Overall performance
  • Screen quality
  • Photo-video quality

To claim that the iPhone 14 is just a marginally improved iPhone 13 isn’t entirely true…nor false, for that matter. If it inherits the appearance and the screen of its elder, it recovers the SoC of the iPhone 13 Pro (and its more powerful GPU). The back camera changes little at the hardware level, but now benefits from the new Photonic Engine which improves the quality of images in low light.

More interesting for selfie fans, the front camera gains autofocus which ensures sharp images and has the cinematic mode which switches to 4K. Video capture benefits from an ultra-stabilized “action” mode that we consider successful.

Finally, the device improves the safety of its owner thanks to the detection of car accidents as well as the possibility of sending a distress message by satellite (in the United States only for the moment). Can we reasonably advise this iPhone 13S which does not say its name? Yes, if you are sensitive to its novelties or if you want to switch from an old model (iPhone X and earlier) to a state-of-the-art iPhone.

If these few new features leave you cold, turn instead to the iPhone 13, still in the catalog and whose price will be a little lower (between 110 and 150 euros less, depending on the model).

Sold at 1,019, 1,149 or 1,409 euros (128, 256 and 512 GB versions) in France, the entry ticket is high. Very high. Especially since Apple no longer considers it useful to provide a charger with the device. On the other side of the Atlantic, the price is significantly lower. It is true that taxes and other European frills add to the bill. But not to the point of creating such a price difference, especially at a time when the dollar and the euro are almost equivalent…
