Discover this error of the film “The Visitors”, which in the space of a replica, creates an inconsistency in the course of Godefroy de Montmirail.
With 13.78 million admissions when it was released in 1993, Les Visiteurs is still to this day the 15th biggest cinema success in France. It brings together Jean Reno, Christian Clavier and Valérie Lemercier in front of Jean-Marie Poiré’s camera for a period comedy, tinged with time travel. And precisely, the biggest mistake of the film has to do with the chronology.
In the film, Godefroy de Montmirail, known as “the Bold” and his squire Jacquouille the scoundrel, decide to go back in time to repair a tragic mistake that cost Godefroy his marriage and the life of his stepfather. But the apothecary makes a mistake in the potion and here they are, not a few minutes before the tragedy but hundreds of years in the future! They will then rub shoulders with their descendants: Béatrice de Montmirail and Jacques-Henri Jacquard.
When he arrived in 1992, Godefroy met the local priest and gave him his date of birth, which was then reported by the priest to Béatrice de Montmirail: the year 1076.

An assertion which is also supported by the historical book of the Montmirail family, which Béatrice shows to her husband Jean-Pierre, who confirms the information by indicating the date of birth of Godefroy at 1076, and yet!

A few tens of minutes later in the film, while Godefroy has long posed as “cousin Hubert” to his little-little-little little girl Béatrice, he finally decides to tell her the truth. and reveal his identity to him. In doing so, he recalls his date of birth, which this time is… 1079!

One could have accepted that Godefroy did not know his date of birth well by giving it because the censuses were undoubtedly more uncertain than today, or imagine that it was the Montmirail family book which possibly contained an error, but here , it is not so !
It is indeed Godefroy himself who twice gives his date of birth during the film and who makes a mistake in one of the scenes, thus creating an inconsistency as to the character’s past. Fortunately, this error does not impact the film enough to make it collapse, and does not disturb the entertainment offered by Jean-Marie Poiré and Christian Clavier, nor the laughter that it can trigger! “Do you want suppleness?”
