The Walking Dead – The Ones Who Live: Rick’s new life in the CRM has a surprising comic reference – recap of episode 1

We’ve had to wait for many years, but we’re finally finding out what’s happened to Rick Grimes since he was kidnapped by Jadis in season 9 of “The Walking Dead” and handed over to the Civic Republic Military. Episode 1 of “The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live” has started on MagentaTV.

And the marmot greets you every day

Rick has been doing terribly since becoming an unwilling CRM recruit. The story picks up five years after the bridge explosion, and since then Rick’s days have looked very much the same. He performs the lowest service for the CRM and eliminates undead both in the controlled environment on the CRM premises and in the wild during field operations.

He tries to escape many times and the first escape attempt we are shown is particularly devastating. Rick Grimes is abandoned in a forest with other recruits and soldiers where they are supposed to destroy numerous zombies. But Rick has other plans. Since he is led by a soldier on a kind of long-range and extendable leash, he uses his ax to chop off the hand to which the leash is attached during battle.

A clear reference to the comics, in which Rick loses his hand the first time he meets the Governor. After Aaron lost his hand in the main series, we no longer assumed that Rick would still meet his comic fate.

But of course Rick is caught and taken back to the military base, where he has to continue killing zombies day after day. In his delirium of pain, he dreams of being Michonne, whom he meets there before the apocalypse. Instead of the combative Katana Michonne, for the first time we see a Michonne in a pants suit that fits into an office job.

When Rick wakes up again, we learn in a letter from Rick to Michonne that he woke up in a military hospital after the bridge explosion. The military’s troops number several thousand, and the city they protect has several hundred thousand residents. But no one is allowed to find out about the city, so no one who knows about it is allowed to leave.

But he also mentions that the city has its own government, independent of the military. Those new to the CRM must spend six years killing strays outside the city or performing other community services, such as food production or working in water and waste management. Only then do newcomers have the chance to live in the city. In this phase the recruits are called “consignees”. Rick, he explains, was never interested in that. All he ever wanted was to go back to Michonne. A new day of zombie killing begins.

Rick’s special mission

For some reason, despite all his attempts to escape, his superior Lieutenant Colonel Donald Okafor is very interested in Rick and always puts in a good word for him with the military chief, Major General Beale. Okafor wants Rick to become a soldier. Since Rick sees the new position as a new opportunity to escape, he accepts.

So Rick gets a new uniform and a prosthetic hand. He begins soldier training with his consignee colleague Pearl Thorne. In between, Rick repeatedly escapes into his dreams with Office Michonne and they spend their lunch breaks together. Finally, a secret meeting takes place between Okafor, Thorne and Grimes. Okafor wants to make the two of them leaders in the CRM to change the military from within.

The As and Bs explained

Okafor explains to them the A and B classification of people. Aces are those who possess strength and leadership qualities. Bs, on the other hand, are normal people who are trying to survive. They are the ones the CRM collects and lets live in the Civic Republic after they have completed their consignee years. The As are sent away and killed because they are too much trouble for the CRM.

He sees Thorne and Rick as A’s, so he wants them to help him change the CRM. To do this, however, they must advance in rank and receive the Echelon briefing. It contains all the secrets that 90 percent of CRM troops don’t know.

Major General Beale becomes aware of Rick

Rick becomes more and more the focus of the CRM, even Major General Beale visits him to find out what Okafor plans to do with him. But Rick holds tight. In the near future, Rick plans to escape through the sewers. During a mission in an old chemical factory he wants to escape again, but Thorne finds him in time and persuades him to come back with him.

Rick finds out that Okafor knows a lot about him because he read the letters to Michonne. Okafor blackmails him with the knowledge. If Rick wants to escape again, he will seek out Michonne and his family and kill everyone Rick knows. As the argument breaks out, we learn that Okafor was responsible for the bombing of Atlanta and Los Angeles. Only with Philadelphia did he change his mind at the last moment. Instead of Philadelphia, he killed a naval base with 4,000 people, including his wife Estelle.

However, Okafor doesn’t give up and wants Rick to become a high-ranking officer, him and Thorne. Later, Thorne and Rick learn that Omaha has been destroyed. Now Thorne believes that Omaha was only wiped out because it was known where the settlement was. So she is convinced of the CRM’s secrecy tactics.

Rick writes a final letter to Michonne. He has given up on ever being able to escape the CRM. After a time jump, we see Rick in a helicopter that is suddenly attacked. Okafor is stabbed, the helicopter crashes, and Rick learns who attacked them: Michonne.
