The Weeknd has a new task: The Grammy Award winner has been named “Goodwill Ambassador” by the UN World Food Program.

The Weeknd (31) has a great honor. The musician was named “Goodwill Ambassador” by the United Nations World Food Program at the end of the week. “The UN World Food Program does the urgent and important work of changing and saving lives every day. I want to talk about world hunger and help those in need,” said the musician in a statement.

“We are thrilled to have The Weeknd in our family. His compassion and commitment to helping the hungry people of the world is truly inspiring,” said CEO David Beasley. Abel Makkonen Tesfaye, as The Weeknd’s real name is called, now joins actress Kate Hudson (42), ex-Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon (43) and designer Michael Kors (62) as an ambassador.

The Weeknd has been involved for years

The Weeknd is a three-time Grammy Award winner and was even nominated for an Oscar for its single “Earned It” from the movie “Fifty Shades of Gray” (2015). The Canadian has been committed to social causes for years. In the spring he announced that he had donated one million dollars to Ethiopia through the World Food Program.

“My heart breaks for my people in Ethiopia, where innocent civilians – from young children to the elderly – are senselessly murdered and entire villages are abandoned in fear and destruction,” the singer with Ethiopian roots wrote in April on Instagram. Civil war broke out in the Tigray region in November 2020.
