The Witcher 3: next-gen version spontaneously postponed – fans know the reason

The next-gen update for The Witcher 3 was spontaneously postponed indefinitely by CD Projekt Red. The studio didn’t provide an official explanation for the move, but fans have already figured out what’s likely the reason for the postponement.

CD Projekt Red postpones next-gen version of The Witcher 3

Originally, the next-gen version of The Witcher 3 was supposed to appear in the second half of 2021, but the revision of the role-playing game was then postponed to the second quarter of 2022. But CD Projekt Red can’t seem to meet this deadline either.

As announced by the team via the official The Witcher Twitter account, they have decided to to have the next-gen version finished by the internal development team. Previously, this work was done by the team at Saber Interactive, who also produced the Switch version of The Witcher 3, among other things.

“We have decided to entrust our internal development team with the remaining work on the next-gen version of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. We are currently evaluating the scope of work to be performed and as such have to postpone the release of Q2 until further notice. We will keep you updated as soon as possible. We thank you for your understanding.”

Fans discover reason for the studio change

Why the team decided to to end the cooperation with the previous developer Saber Interactive and completing the development on your own is left open.

Some fans then did some research and found out why CD Projekt Red probably dumped the Saber Interactive team: the company is officially based in the USA, however, the main studio is based in Russia. Due to the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia, it is reasonable to assume that CD Projekt Red has therefore terminated its cooperation with the Russian studio.

An official statement from CD Projekt Red is still pending. So far it is only a guess of the fans, which sounds very plausible. However, it is quite possible that the Polish studio prematurely ended its collaboration with Saber Interactive for other reasons. As soon as there is news, we will provide you with the relevant information.
