- The Wild Hunt will play an important role in the upcoming “The Witcher” episodes.
- Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich promises a background story for each individual rider of the ghost formation.
- The Wild Hunt is after Ciri.
“The Witcher” took some liberties in season 2 and changed stories from the book template. In Season 3 of the Netflix series, the tactics continue and we learn far more about the Wild Hunt than the books ever revealed.
Showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich reveals that every single rider of the Wild Hunt will have their own backstory in the sequel to The Witcher. The Wild Hunt, ghost riders seen as omens of war, play a much larger role in the video game series than in the books.
The riders can be seen in a vision and in the finale, when Voleth Meir, Ciri, Geralt and Yennefer enter another realm through the portal.
We’ll get to know them as real characters, they get the same backstories as the other characters. We thought the Wild Hunt for Season 2 would be a good fit because we’re learning more about Ciri’s powers. Geralt’s main drive this season is to protect and train Ciri, but he also needs to understand what he’s protecting her from and training her for in the first place and part of that exploration are Ciri’s powers – what they are, what they access and what waves they are be struck across the continent.

Through Ciri’s power, she has the ability to open portals using the monoliths scattered across the continent. Voleth Meir exploits this power by possessing Ciri at the end of season 2, thus transporting herself to another realm.
In this realm, Voleth Meir transforms into one of the Horsemen of the Wild Hunt. Since Voleth Meir only appears in the series and not in the books, we can assume that the Netflix series takes further liberties in the narrative around the villains.
Spoiler! – You know that from the books and video games about the Wild Hunt
If you don’t want to know exactly what the Wild Hunt actually is, you should stop reading now. The following are spoilers from the Witcher saga book and video game series.
The Wild Hunt is often dismissed as a folk tale by the continent’s citizens. The suddenly appearing ghost knights are just considered a bad omen. In fact, there is something completely different behind it. The Wild Hunt is an elite cavalry force of Aen Elle Elves.
They roam the dimensions in their ghost form to find slaves for their world. Ultimately, they are also looking for Ciri when they learn that she has portal magic and the elder blood. With this, the Aen Elle want to regain their old power in order to travel through the dimensions again in their proper bodies.
In addition, Eredin, the leader of the hunt, wants to father children with Ciri in order to secure further descendants with Elder blood. So the hunt for Ciri will most likely be a big theme in upcoming The Witcher episodes.
The Wild Hunt may also play a role in The Witcher: Blood Origin prequel series, as the Aen Elle make their first dimensional journeys during the Conjunction of the Spheres. The conjunction of the spheres is a central theme of the spin-off.
In summer 2022 you can probably dive back into the witcher world, then “The Witcher: Blood Origin” will probably appear on Netflix. “The Witcher” season 3 will most likely not be released until winter 2022.
