Arctic is recalling some batches of MX-5 thermal compound due to a manufacturing defect, however individual affected syringes may still reach retailers. If you catch one, the problem becomes apparent before you apply it and you can request a replacement from the manufacturer.
According to Arctic, the silicone oil, which is responsible for the spreadability, separates from the rest of the paste in the affected MX-5 tubes, leaving behind a hard mass that resembles putty. The silicone oil runs out first when you open the tube. The paste basically retains its properties as a heat-conducting agent between the processor and CPU cooler, but is very difficult to distribute in this way.
If the thermal paste arrives as a homogeneous mass after shipping, no problems should arise later. The cause of the problem, meanwhile, was that there was too much time between mixing the MX-5 thermal compound and packaging it in the individual tubes at different plants.
From Arctic’s communication:
“Affected batches have already been identified and recalled from the market, so that no other affected goods can be sold. We regret that this quality defect, despite constant quality controls and the greatest care in the production of the goods, was not detected before delivery to dealers and end customers could.
Of course, we take back affected MX-5 thermal paste without exception and offer a replacement product. To do this, we ask that you contact us and provide proof of purchase using the form.”
