Replace the traditional (and bulky) speakers of current vehicles, with ultra-thin models, designed to integrate as discreetly as possible into the cabin, while offering an immersive 3D audio experience. This is the goal of LG Display with its Thin Actuator Sound Solution.

Developed in partnership with a global audio company “that LG did not wish to name in its press release, this device” invisible could represent an interesting advance for the audio equipment of future vehicles.

LG Display at work (technological)

But how did LG achieve such a flat and thin result? By separating from the usual components of a classic loudspeaker. No coil, horn, membranes or magnets here. Instead, what LG describes as a ” movie-like excite “. This technology manages to make display panels and various materials vibrate by placing it directly inside the body, we read. According to LG, this new type of loudspeaker manages, in doing so, to recreate a ” rich, immersive 3D sound experience “.

In detail, the new generation speakers designed by LG Display do not exceed 150 x 90 x 2.5 mm for 40 grams. They can therefore be concealed very easily almost anywhere in the interior of a vehicle: the dashboard, the doors, the headrests or even the roof lining. The idea being of course to free up space without compromising audio quality “Promises LG.

Fine, but when is it?

As rightly pointed out Engadget, this novelty is in fact not really one… at least if we take it out of its automotive context. Similar vibration panels have indeed already been installed in the past in some OLED televisions manufactured by LG or even its Japanese competitor Sony. However, this is the first time, to our knowledge, that this type of device has been designed specifically to integrate cars.

On the launch side, the Korean giant should unveil its technology in more detail at CES 2023. The brand finally promises a start of marketing in the first half of 2023. It remains to be seen how quickly the automotive sector will choose to seize it. afterwards.
