Since 2017, wireless earphone manufacturers have been trying to offer models that are comfortable enough to wear overnight. Apart from Bose, and even for very expensive headphones, none have really succeeded in convincing users. It is in this context that Anker unveiled its new product: the Soundcore Sleep A20.
Headphones designed to block noise
The Soundcore Sleep A20 carries over the promise of the A10s: there’s no active noise cancellation here. Instead, the earbuds feature what Anker calls “eTwin-Seal ear tips ” which the Chinese company claims can block out three times the noise of typical silicone ear tips.
The headphones are also designed to play white noise from a “ sound library included » in an attempt to further block external distractions. This is what the Bose Sleepbuds II offer.
Anker says their compact design means they’re comfortable even if you like to sleep on your side.
Battery life is the A20’s most significant improvement over its predecessor. The earbuds now offer up to 14 hours instead of 10 hours of white noise playback in “sleep mode” and up to 80 hours total with their charging case.
If you want to fall asleep to music streaming from your phone, the earbuds’ battery life drops to 10 hours. It’s enough for a good night’s sleep.
Do not wake the person sleeping next to you
Other improvements over the first generation sleep headphones include a built-in alarm designed to wake you up without disturbing anyone sleeping next to you, and support for “ automatic sleep monitoring with sleep position tracking “.
And if you lose them, you can use their app to have the earbuds sound an alert to help you get them out of your bedding.
A launch via Kickstarter
The Soundcore Sleep A20 will launch via a Kickstarter campaign on April 16. As usual, you should be careful with crowdfunding projects, even if this is a serious company and not an unknown startup. The headphones will be priced at $150, but will be available for $90 during the fundraising campaign.
Against competition
Anker is launching its product after Bose, its main competitor, discontinued its rival Sleepbuds II headphones.
Three former Bose employees have now struck out on their own with the Ozlo Sleepbudswhich are in production according to their Kickstarter page with first deliveries scheduled for April.
