“They are bastards and scum”

Dmitry Medvedev leaves no questions unanswered on Telegram, for example this one: “I’m often asked why my Telegram posts are so harsh. The answer is I hate her. They are bastards and scum. They want death for us, Russia. And as long as I live, I will do everything to make them go away.”

Russia’s propaganda is heard in Italy, but also encounters resistance. Former Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev is now revealing pure hatred of the West.

ZA propaganda war is raging between Italy and Russia. Almost every day there is a new escalation level. Not only the media – the traditional as well as the social media of both countries – are involved, but also the governments in Rome and Moscow. On Monday, the Russian Ambassador Sergei Razov followed a summons to the Italian Foreign Ministry that had been issued the day before. At the meeting, the ministry’s secretary-general, Ettore Francesco Sequi, dismissed Razov’s allegations that Italian media coverage of the Ukraine war was pursuing an “anti-Russian campaign” that was discriminatory and led to abuses against Russian citizens in Italy. According to reports, Rasow did not comment on the conversation with Sequi. Instead, the Russian embassy in Rome later circulated a message from Razov on its Facebook page, in which he reiterated that “the line of propaganda spread by the Italian media must be described as hostile.” The ambassador linked this with the call for “moderation and balance, which have always characterized Italian foreign policy in the interest of good relations”.

On Tuesday, former Russian President and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who has led the Kremlin party United Russia since 2012, made it clear what Moscow means by moderate and balanced – not just with regard to Italy but to the West as a whole and is also Deputy Head of President Vladimir Putin’s Security Council in Moscow. In a Telegram post on Tuesday, Medvedev justified the harsh tone of his anti-Western rants: “I’m often asked why my Telegram posts are so harsh. The answer is: because I hate them. They are bastards and scum. They want our death, the death of Russia. And as long as I live, I will do everything to make them disappear.” Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio dismissed Medvedev’s statements as “very serious and dangerous”: “These are not signs of a willingness to engage in dialogue, an opening towards a ceasefire, an attempt to achieve peace. Rather, they are unmistakable words of threat to those who persistently strive for peace.” Medvedev’s words “also cause us great concern because they come from the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council,” Di Maio wrote.
