” NOTWe will soon be together my love. “Okay, cigarettes, we’ll bring you cigarettes, hold on, see you tomorrow.” “Be nice to your sister.” To their children who remained in Nagorno-Karabakh, to their soldier sons who shiver with cold on the outposts, to their husbands, their friends, their lovers perhaps; the women of the Goris hotel whisper sweet nothings on the telephone.

“Be patient, it will reopen soon…, everyone says so. Except that’s not true. Here, in the great Soviet hotel in the last Armenian city before the Azerbaijani border, as in Yerevan or elsewhere, nobody knows anything. Except that nothing moves.
