this action cam wants to overshadow GoPro thanks to its image quality

DJI has unveiled its new action cam, the DJI Osmo Action 4. It benefits from a larger sensor, an extended dynamic range and a 10-bit D-log profile ideal for video editing.

Definitely, DJI does not stop announcing new products. After its DJI Air 3 drone presented last week, the Chinese manufacturer is renewing its range of action cameras this Wednesday with the new DJI Osmo Action 4.

As its name suggests, this new model actually succeeds the DJI Osmo Action 3 launched last September. Unsurprisingly, it thus adopts the same design as the previous version. DJI thus seems to have set aside the experiments made on previous versions such as the DJI Action 2 which was divided into two distinct blocks.

A much larger sensor

On the front of the action camera, we will thus find the optical block on the right and a touch screen on the back, practical for vlogging-style shooting, on the left. Of course, a main touch screen is also positioned at the back of the camera.

It is especially in terms of optical performance that DJI has improved its formula compared to the previous generation. The Chinese manufacturer uses this time the larger sensor in 1/1.3 inch format, against 1/1.7 inch on the Osmo Action 3. This results in wider photosites, 2.4 microns on the side, against 1.6 microns so far. What allow, on paper, better performance in low light, with less digital noise, and greater dynamic range. The DJI Osmo Action 4, however, has an identical lens with a field of view of 155 degrees opening at f / 2.8.

Over a billion colors in video

In terms of video performance, the DJI Osmo Action 4 does not change the recipe of the previous version either by maintaining a maximum definition of 4K at 120p, against 5.3K 60p – or 4K 120p – for the GoPro Hero 11 Black. The DJI action camera, however, benefits from the D-log M profile capable of recording 1 billion colors thanks to its 10-bit quantization. An ideal profile for retouching and grading in post-production. A 2x digital zoom is also offered during recording. Of course, the camera still benefits from the various stabilization functions dear to DJI with HorizonSteady 360°. It is also able to capture videos natively in horizontal as well as vertical. The audio is not outdone with three microphones that will allow stereo recording and software reduction of wind noise.

Regarding ergonomics, DJI announces that its Osmo Action 4 can be used without a case up to 18 meters deep underwater. It can also film for 150 minutes at -20°C. The autonomy of the DJI Osmo Action 4 in normal condition can this time exceed 2 h 30, announces the manufacturer. Still in terms of the battery, 18 minutes of charging will recover 80% of the battery.

The DJI Osmo Action 4 is available this Wednesday. It is displayed from 429 euros in a standard bundle with an extreme battery, a protective frame, an adhesive base and a fixing screw. Remember, however, that the DJI Osmo Action 3 was offered from 539 euros.
