A descending flow reached on a Sunday morning in rural upstate Wisconsin. Upstream speed and ping, on the other hand, are less flattering.
On Reddit, a user reports quite impressive speeds obtained thanks to his Starlink connection. The Speedtest screenshot indicates 301 Mbits/s in download and 20.5 Mbits/s in upload. These are indeed quite unusual values for the service.
Very unstable flows
The author, who publishes under the pseudonym DullKn1fe, specifies having obtained these results on a Sunday morning. He resides in a rural area of north-central Wisconsin (a state also located in the north-central United States), in an open area and with no other Starlink users nearby.
The previous speed record for Starlink dates back to March. Another Reddit user, NelsonMinar, from Grass Valley, Calif., reported download speeds of 299 Mbps.
These flows remain exceptional, and above all, very fluctuating. NelsonMinar had automatically read the values over a period of 7 days. During this observation period, upload speeds regularly exceeded 200 Mbits/s, but also often fell below 50 Mbits/s. The lowest recorded value was downright 1.23 Mbit/s!
Also, we are talking about “record”, but know that in May 2021, during the beta phase in Germany, the tester 219gaming had recorded a download speed of 560 Mbits / s.
Median download speeds rather around 100 Mbits/s in the United States and France
To take a little height (no pun intended) on these speeds, an article by okla gives a more general overview. The site’s latest report is from March 2022 and covers the fourth quarter of 2021.
He tells us that the median speed of Starlink in the United States was 104.97 Mbits/s (download) and 12.04 Mbits/s (upload). The flows turned out to be quite variable according to the zones. The fastest median download speed was in Miami Date County, Florida at 191 Mbps. Columbia County, Oregon had the lowest results, with a median upload speed of 64.95 Mbps.
The report ofokla contains data from 15 countries, including France. So be aware that in France, the median download speeds were 102.15 Mbits / s, and the median amounts, 19.84 Mbits / s during the last months of 2021.
