Criticized for their lack of aesthetic appeal when they first appeared, smartphone notches are now ubiquitous, and no one really disputes their usefulness anymore. The “notch” makes it possible to accommodate the front camera, but also various sensors that have become essential in any self-respecting photophone. First appearing in the Essential Phone in 2017, the notch was then adopted by Apple, which was able to develop the concept in its iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, to make it the Dynamic Island, a multi-purpose “pill” and evolutionary form.

On the Android side, the developers have tried to offer ersatz functionality offered by Cupertino, with dynamicSpot, for example. It must be said, however, that until now, no one has yet offered transcendent functionalities. That may well change with “Touch the Notch,” an Android app that will finally make that much-unloved little bit of screen useful. Dubiaz, the developer of the program explains its usefulness: “The area around the camera cutout has always been useless. This app turns the camera hole into a shortcut button to perform many activities and make it easier to use the phone.

This application multiplies the possibilities of personalization of Android smartphones

This new button allows you to define shortcuts to separate functions depending on whether you press the notch longer or shorter, double tap it, or which way you swipe it. These gestures will allow you, for example, to:

• Switch from light theme to dark theme
• Change user interface
• Turn off screen
• Switch to “Do not disturb” mode
• Toggle automatic orientation
• Open power button menu
• Play previous or next track on Spotify

You would have understood it, the possibilities are really numerous. To top it all off, the developer has also focused on security. It simply does not collect any data regarding app usage. Android app “Touch the Notch” is freebut you’ll have to shell out some cash to enjoy the more advanced features.
