Meats, drinks, vegetables… The big brand E. Leclerc freezes the price of nearly 1,000 products to help the French face inflation.

To help the French cope with inflation, E. Leclerc will freeze its prices. If the increase in the prices of certain suppliers has prompted certain distributors to give up selling different products on their shelves, consumers are looking to take advantage of all kinds of promo codes. Attentive to good plans, they do not forget product recalls, including this salmon sold at Lidl, potentially dangerous to health.

The chairman of the strategic committee of supermarkets E. Leclerc announced today on RTL the price freeze of around 1,000 products from Monday April 3, 2023. At the microphone of the radio, Michel-Édouard Leclerc clarified to Yves Calvi: “This is what we call the essentials, the items that we see in half of the trolleys”. But which ones are targeted exactly?

Leclerc: a price freeze until the end of the summer

E.Leclerc stores block the prices of food and non-food products, hygiene products and even cleaning products: meat, drinks, products for cat litter… The objective is to concern a majority of French.

A total of 979 products are targeted. They are all Eco + brand, which corresponds to the entry level of Leclerc. Michel-Édouard Leclerc explains that it grew by 60% last year and that “all the buyers of big brands that have become very expensive have been moving towards these products lately”.

The president of the supermarkets wants Eco+ to become a European brand. He does not consider his products to be low-end. A brand press release states: “For 4-5 years, our products carry the Nutri-score and therefore it allows consumers to look at the level of fat, salt…”.

The group did not wish to set up an anti-inflation basket, considering itself to be “generally cheaper” than its competitors. But since inflation could last until the end of the summer, he preferred to back off.
