This is good news if you want to test using a private virtual networkalso known by its English acronym of VPN, since Microsoft makes Edge VPN available to you for free.

In addition, a monthly data envelope now increased to 5 GB per month is included.

Monthly traffic now multiplied by 5 on Edge VPN

It’s official, the VPN natively integrated into the Microsoft Edge web browser, Edge VPN, now includes a monthly envelope of 5GB of traffic. The main goal is to allow you to browse longer while connected to this virtual private network. Although free and available from the outset, because Microsoft Edge is installed natively on all Windows devices, Edge VPN had the main disadvantage of only offering, until the end of June 2023, a meager gigabyte of monthly traffic. Suffice to say that apart from activating it in a very specific circumstance of short duration, you were not going to get very far.

While not one of the best free VPNs, Edge VPN does at least have the added benefit of potentially making it easier to grow your privacy online when you use it. However, if you have ever had a VPN, even a basic one, in your hands, do not expect a revolution of the genre with Edge VPN. Microsoft’s young solution, launched in April 2023, is content, for now, to establish an anonymous and secure connection between your device and the website of your request. Exit, therefore, from features as classic as the choice of server at the time of connection, or even more advanced tools such as servers dedicated to streaming as offered by certain paid VPNs.

Pay attention to data privacy

To use Edge VPN, you also need to be logged into your Microsoft account, which is not the best of the best for remaining anonymous online. Indeed, with synchronization activated by default on the Microsoft account, so much data such as favorites or browsing history circulates together with Edge VPN. In fact, logging into your account is not an option as this helps Microsoft ensure that you don’t exceed 5 GB of monthly traffic, especially if you log in to different devices.

In particular, this poses a potential confidentiality problem in the event of a leak of data linked to your Microsoft account. Edge VPN still deserves some major changes to best guarantee the confidentiality of the data of its users. More and more web browsers, like Opera, are offering a more or less sophisticated free VPN solution to their functionality.
