This Chinese brand took 4 places in the top 20 electric cars of November

Electric cars from Renault and Peugeot are regulars in the TOP 20 of French registrations. But, for a Chinese brand like MG, it’s much more exceptional.

The results of registrations for the month of November 2022 were published on December 1. We find at the top of the ranking several models that are not really surprises. Tesla, Renault, Dacia and Peugeot dominate new registrations of electric vehicles in France. Among the many models of the Renault and Stellantis groups, there are still some foreign models that are also doing well: Tesla, Volkswagen, Kia or Mini.

The surprise of this month of November is to see that MG positions almost all of its electric range in the top 20: MG4, ZS EV and MG5. At one place, we could even take into account the Marvel R, which ranks 21st this month.

The beginning of success for MG?

The months go by, but are not always alike when it comes to deliveries of electric vehicles. Like Tesla, which appears at the top of the rankings once a quarter before being more discreet, or even absent, the other months. MG had already positioned two of its models in the Top 20 for the month of October: MG4 and Marvel R. For the month of November, these two models are supplemented by MG5 and ZS.

  • 11th place: MG4 with 507 registrations;
  • 13th place: SZ with 328 registrations;
  • 16th place: MG5 with 282 registrations;
  • 21st place: MARVEL R with 208 registrations.

MG’s fairly aggressive commercial policy on the prices of its entire range is probably not unrelated to these good results, in the face of competition whose prices climb at regular intervals. However, it was not a bet won in advance for the brand, which made its big comeback in France only 2 years ago.

MG has already registered 10,269 cars in France since the start of 2022, and MG4 should quickly climb the registration rankings for the coming months.

Already over 4,300 MG4 orders

If deliveries keep pace, the MG4 could quickly enter the monthly Top 10 electric cars, starting next month. With more than 4,300 orders recorded, the MG4 is off to a good start for a foreign model.

We remain far from the results of a Dacia Spring or the Renault Mégane E-Tech at their launch, but MG does not leave either with the same notoriety, nor the same network.

According to AAAData data collected in October, the profile of the first buyers of the MG4 is also quite interesting. In particular, we discover that nearly one in two customers is under 56, while the data collected for the Nissan Ariya gives more than 94.4% of people aged 56 and over. On MG4, the share of 26-40 year olds even weighs 24.3% of sales. The MG5 station wagon is also positioned on a fairly young clientele, attracted by attractive prices.

The MG4 has attracted almost as many individuals as companies: more precisely, 58.7% of sales go to individuals and 41.3% to corporate fleets. One could have imagined that these new MGs (MG4 like MG5) would be aimed above all at individuals. It is a surprise to see that several companies have chosen to adopt these electric models.

A final figure communicated by AAAdata also draws our attention to the method of financing the first MG4 buyers. LOA and LDD are normally on the rise for electric vehicles, but not on MG4. There is 79.9% personal financing or classic credit on first orders. This means that rental offers are not very successful with buyers, who prefer buying.
