The Danish government continues its raid on torrent file sharing sites and their users.
For several months, Denmark steps up its fight against illegal downloading. Although in this country, peer-to-peer file sharing platforms are closing down following convictions and complaints brought by the Danish rights holders’ organization, the habit of downloading and sharing pirated content remains tenacious. Indeed, the closure of one of these illegal platforms is quickly followed by the emergence of a site offering an equivalent service. The closure of Danishbits in 2020, for example, only increased the popularity of another private tracker, Aasgard, which had several million visitors per day.
Far from giving up in the face of this endless fight, the Danish justice system and the Danish association for the defense of rights holders are increasing the pressure on the private torrent tracker managers and their users. On its website, the RettighedsAlliancen announces that “thanks to NSK’s persistent efforts against the Danish practice of file sharing, several managers, file providers, and users of these now closed services will appear before the courtse over the last few years.”
This country sentences users of illegal downloading platforms to prison
A 37-year-old Danish citizen has just been sentenced to 6 months suspended prison sentence with a fine of around €1,300 for sharing and downloading several hundred files. Holders of intellectual rights do not hide it, “this judgment contributes to give examples to users of file sharing services and similarities with the DanishBytes case”, following which a 35-year-old man was sentenced to the same sentence.

In a press release, the National Special Crimes Unit, which handles financial and cybercrime cases, the special prosecutor announces the color : “I am satisfied with the verdict, which is based on solid investigative work. This verdict sends a clear signal to everyone who shares files : Illegal sharing of movies, music and other copyrighted content can have serious consequences.
