This evening with the family: the oldest of all Disney

(Re)discover “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs”, the very first animated feature film produced by Enchanted Studios and available on Disney+.

From 6 years old

The day she consults her magic mirror and learns that she is not the most beautiful woman in the kingdom but that Snow White, her daughter-in-law, now surpasses her, the Queen falls into a terrible rage against the young princess.

Calling on a hunter, the sovereign asks him to get rid of Snow White, who has just fallen in love with a prince. Unable to accomplish his detestable mission, the hunter pushes the princess to flee into the forest. After a terrifying journey, she finds refuge in a strange little house, in which she discovers seven small beds.

Even if Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is not the first animated feature film in the history of cinema – since the Argentinian film El Apòstol had already achieved this feat 20 years earlier – the classic from Disney studios is beautiful well the first colorful and talking animated feature film of all time, and will be remembered as the one that truly changed the history of cinema.

Before its release in American theaters 86 years ago, many were the skeptics who did not bet a dollar on this project, which at the time the press described as “Disney madness” because of its excessive ambition and of its colossal budget.

Yet Walt had dreamed of bringing this Brothers Grimm tale to life ever since the day when, as a teenager, he had seen a silent adaptation of Snow White.

When he decided to make a feature film based on the concept of the Silly Symphonies – a series of animated shorts that were a hit at the time – it was therefore to the young princess that he chose to devote his film.

Developing brand new techniques and not hesitating to take all the risks to achieve his ends, he unveiled to the public of the time a spectacle which the world had never yet witnessed. Even today – and even if almost a century of animation has gone by – we can recognize the many graphic qualities of Snow White. The beauty of its backgrounds, the finesse of its characters, the effectiveness of its story.

Without forgetting three essential ingredients, which waltz disney will make it a point of honor to reuse in each of its future recipes: unforgettable songs, humor, and of course emotion. “For every burst of laughter, it takes a tear”he used to remind his employees.

The greatest success in the young history of cinema when it was released in theaters in 1937, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs remains a veritable monument of animation to (re)discover as a family, even if we advise you to save smaller some particularly scary sequences (see below).

What they will like…

  • The 7 dwarfs, their friendly side, their good nature, their humor and of course their memorable song: “Hey-Ho, Hey-Ho, we’re coming home from work!”
  • The party scene with the dwarfs, with Snow White, and her dance number with Dopey
  • The animals of the forest, each more adorable than the other, and which accompany Snow White in all her adventures

What can worry them…

  • The magic mirror consulted by the Queen, simply terrifying and present from the first scene of the film, on which we recommend that you skip it if you are accompanied by too young spectators
  • The witch, of course: when she learns that Snow White has escaped, the Queen herself concocts a magic potion to transform herself into a hideous and evil shrew. The sequence, as anyone who encountered it as a child knows, can be truly traumatic.
  • The crossing of the forest, and the monstrous silhouettes of trees and branches that attack Snow White. A sequence also very frightening for the little ones.
