Elon Musk has made quite a mess on Twitter. Here is an extension that allows you to find some semblance of meaning and avoid being fooled. “Eight dollars”, it is its name, allows to separate the verified accounts of the subscribers of Twitter Blue.
Twitter has been in shambles since the introduction of the new certified badge wanted by Elon Musk. Despite this, the social network with the blue bird is undoubtedly the most important social network in the world, despite its modest popularity compared to behemoths like TikTok or Facebook to name only these two.
The problem with the new verification system is that it takes several clicks to know if an account really had its identity certified or just paid $8 a month for the badge. This opens the door to all possible abuses in terms of disinformation. Fortunately, a new expansion brings some order to all of this.
An extension that lives up to its name
The extension, published on Github by a man named William Seagar, is called neither more nor less than “eight dollars” in reference to the price that must be paid to obtain the badge without certifying its identity.
Once installed, it allows you to clearly identify paying users from others. Instead of the badge, you will see either the mention “Actually Verified” (really verified in French) for certified accounts and “Paid for Verification” (paid to be verified) for Twitter Blue subscribers. Here’s what it looks like with two examples. Frandroid is certified while we have serious doubts about George Washington.
As it is, the extension seems fully functional. She also has the good idea of adding a different icon depending on the category targeted, with a different color code, white for verified accounts and blue for subscribers.
How to install this extension?
To download it, go to this page which details the procedure to follow. This is the classic process for installing an extension that has not yet been validated by Google.
Here is the method to follow:
- Opens the Chrome extensions page: chrome//extensions;
- Activate developer mode at the top right;
- Download the extension from the GitHub page;
- Extract the contents of the compressed folder;
- Click on the Chrome extensions page on “Load unpackaged extension”, choose the uncompressed file and you’re done.
If Elon Musk does not modify once again, as he has been accustomed to for a few days, the way of assigning badges on Twitter, this extension should therefore prove to be very practical. It is still awaiting approval for the Chrome Web Store. Firefox and Edge users can also install it.
