Le Colibri, an Italian drama starring Pierfrancesco Favino and Bérénice Béjo, hits theaters on August 2. A real triumph in Italy, the work is produced by Francesca Archibugi.

Released in theaters on August 2, Le Colibri is directed by Francesca Archibugi and worn by Italian superstar Pierfrancesco Favino, in duet with Bérénice Béjo. The story first takes us to the early 1970s. It is by the sea that Marco Carrera meets Luisa Lattes for the first time, a beautiful, rather special girl.

It is a love that will never be consummated but will never be extinguished. Marco’s married life will take place in Rome, with Marina and their daughter Adele. In the grip of a sinister destiny which subjects him to terrible trials, Marco finds himself in Florence.

Ready to protect him from the worst blows of fate, Daniele Carradori, Marina’s psychoanalyst, teaches Marco to face the most unexpected changes in life. The film is adapted from the novel The Hummingbirdwritten by Sandro Veronesi, winner of the prestigious Strega Prize.

“I have a great affection for the writer and I was inevitably a little anxious at the idea of ​​adapting this book which I like very much; I did not want to disappoint him. On this film, I only worked only with great people: Domenico Procacci and Anne-Dominique Toussaint in production, Sandro Veronesi himself, the actors, and so many others”explains Francesca Archibugi, who has been friends with the author for several years.

Note that Le Colibri differs from the novel by the choice of the opening scene: the book begins with the meeting between Marco Carrera and the psychoanalyst. For her part, the filmmaker chose to start with the death of her sister and the meeting with Luisa.

“The book has a similar and dissimilar structure at the same time compared to my film. The meeting with the psychoanalyst anticipates the narrative events, what is going to happen. What determines Marco’s life, the keystone of his life, c “is the guilt he carries with him since the death of his sister. He was the only one to see that she was in bad shape, but he too fled the day of her suicide”analyzes Francesca Archibugi.

For the director, if Marco is a hummingbird, treading water while being struck with helplessness when making choices, it is because of this adolescent trauma which leads to a deep feeling of guilt.

“And then, of course, this scene illuminates Marco’s life in a new light. Besides, in the book there are specific dates, but we wanted to tell an impressionistic story, which breaks the linear flow of life. When we look back on our life, our memories are never chronological”says the filmmaker.

According to the Italian director, Le Colibri also explores the theme of so-called toxic masculinity, of the pater familias. Marco must navigate between an absent father and conflicting siblings, and often finds himself surrounded by women and children. Francesca Archibugi thus thinks that the character is a feminist.

For the artist, Marco Carrera moves through the energy waves of the women around him. His sister, Marina, Luisa, his daughter, even his granddaughter. “These waves are powerful, but men do not realize, or do so too late, that they act by being dominated, not in the physical or martial sense, but in the underground direction”she explains.

According to the filmmaker, women have always dominated a certain part of the world, but an occult, secret world. “This shadow in which women, even the most powerful, have evolved, also has positive aspects”she concludes.
