Queen Elizabeth II’s corgi dogs have become an emblem of royalty. She’s owned more than 30 of them in her lifetime, and this harrowing ritual proves how much she cared about each one of them.

During the jubilee celebrations of Queen Elizabeth II, corgi breed dogs are honored. Whether on small knitted figurines, on dishes or cookies, we find them in all forms. A special corgi emoji adorned with a little crown has even been unveiled by the royal family. It must be said that since Susan, the queen’s first corgi, who was given to her as a puppy on her 18th birthday by her father, Elizabeth II made these dogs a real passion.

Moreover, she has bred several generations of corgis, a breed once threatened with extinction. In all, she owned more than thirty. At the death of each of them, the queen made sure her beloved pet was buried near one of her favorite homeswith a tombstone in his name.

Most of Elizabeth II’s corgis are buried at Sandringham

On the tombstone of Susan, his first dog, we can read the moving epitaph : “For nearly 15 years, the faithful companion of the Queen”, listed alongside his date of birth and death. The same words appear on the tombstones of Susan’s two descendants, Sugar and Heather. If it is not part of royal protocol, Elizabeth II wants her animals to be buried near the places where they lost their lives. Many are therefore in Windsor, Balmoral and Sandringham.

These pet cemeteries have one thing in common: they are all located in a secluded and peaceful place with special resonance for the queen. Willow, her little corgi who died in 2018, for example, was buried near Frogmore House, a place prized by Meghan Markle and Prince Harry for their wedding ceremony. A sad ritual that recalls how much Elizabeth loved her dogs.
