After several teasing campaigns, Hyundai has just lifted the veil on its first 100% electric sports model with the Ioniq 5 N. Under the hood, we find two electric motors delivering a maximum power of 650 hp in boost mode and 770 Nm of torque . With a brand new battery.
“Affordable” and sporty electric cars (i.e. anything other than multimillion-euro supercars) are still rare on the market, even if the MG4 XPower comes to shake up the lines a bit with its two engines giving it 430 hp, alongside the Tesla Model 3 Performance.

To find an electric sports car, it is not among Europeans that you have to go, but among Asians. After the formidable Kia EV6 GT and its 585 hp, Hyundai unveils its technical cousin, the Ioniq 5 N, slightly spicier and clearly oriented for the track, since its development was essentially carried out around the mythical Nürburgring. It is based on the Hyundai Ioniq 5, but greatly improved.
She does not hide her desires
As you can see in the photos, we notice its temperament quite quickly, especially with its specific “Performance Blue” color and its huge 21-inch rims which hide 400 mm discs at the front pinched by four-piston calipers and 360mm discs in the rear. What we do not notice in the photos, these are the 8 cm gained in length and the 5 cm in width due to the new shields and widened tracks.
From the back, we immediately notice a few additional aerodynamic elements to channel the airflow. Overall the car is obviously quite sporty with its specific color and its 21-inch rims, it remains to be seen if it will remain as recognizable in a more conventional color.
Inside, the changes are less marked than outside, although there are several notable elements. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N features a new steering wheel with the N logo in the center and a boost function that allows you to benefit from full power for ten seconds. There is also a small wheel to change the driving mode.
At the level of the infotainment system, nothing changes, except that the graphics are specific with data specific to use on the circuit.
The seats are completely new and refer to the first Hyundai N in history, the i30, while the engineers have thought of integrating a small padding at the level of the lower extremities, where the knee tends to come to bump against the plastic in dynamic driving. Interesting detail too: the trunk of the Ioniq 5 N has become smaller than the normal version and peaks at 480 liters against 527 in normal times.
The most powerful production Hyundai ever
Under the hood, there are horses, a lot of horses, since it is quite simply the most powerful production Hyundai in history. The motor is powered by a new battery from 84kWh which, thanks to its higher energy density, takes up as much space as the 77.4 kWh battery we already knew.
It powers two electric motors: the front one develops 226 hp, the rear one 383 hp. The total power is 609 hp, and it can climb up to 650 hp and 770 Nm with the boost function.
Figures that translate into a 0 to 100 km / h shot in just 3.4 seconds and a maximum speed of 258 km/h. However, this last value is still subject to change. The certification process is still ongoing.
This is also why there is no autonomy and consumption announced yet under the WLTP cycle. The E-GMP platform and its 800 volt architecture can charge up to 240kWenough to go from 10 to 80% in just 18 minutes.
How do sports electric cars provide emotions?
In a nutshell: with an endless amount of software, systems and features. Within the Ioniq 5, there is in particular the N Drift Optimizer, which is intended to simplify drift sessions thanks to a switchover of power and torque at the rear axle.
Active torque distribution, which can be adjusted to eleven levels, is included, while an electronically locking differential (e-LSD) controls the transmission of power to the rear wheels and improves high-speed handling. Note also the presence of N e-shift and N Active Sound.
The N-eshift simulates the gear changes of an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission of N models equipped with a combustion enginewhile controlling the arrival of torque and reproducing the feeling of jerking between gear changes.
The N Active Sound can produce three different sounds, including “Ignition” mode that mimics a heat engine, including exhaust noise through eight internal and two external speakers. A bit like on the very noisy Abarth 500e, which takes up the base of the electric Fiat 500. We can also have a glimpse of this fake realistic noise in the video below.
Price and availability
The Hyundai Ioniq 5 N will arrive in dealerships from next year. The prices have not yet been announced, but they should be similar to those of the Kia EV6 GT which, as a reminder, starts from 74,690 euros in France.
