The project is therefore moving forward, with the announcement that the Global Battery Alliance (GBA) has just made at the World Economic Forum in Davos. This organization, which brings together more than a hundred major players in the automotive industry, has just defined the bases of what the battery passport should be. This is the conclusion of almost three years of work carried out in collaboration between the members of the GBA, all directly involved in the manufacture or use of these batteries, whether Audi, Tesla, Volkswagen or even BASF or CATL.
Technical, but also social and environmental information
This passport will obviously offer technical information, starting with the date and place of manufacture of the battery, its energy (kWh), its capacity (Ah), the type and number of cells used as well as the technology at work. . Its lifetime, estimated in number of cycles, must also be communicated. The GBA also wishes to add the list of raw materials and the percentage of recycled materials used, as well as their country(ies) of extraction. Finally, two indicators should show the level of respect for human rights and child labor regarding the manufacture of this battery, as well as its carbon footprint.
This battery passport should be mandatory from 1 January 2026 for all electric cars and industrial batteries marketed within the European Union. It should be easily accessible online, using a QR code associated with each battery.
For the consumer, this will be a way of judging the quality of his battery. This system will also provide a good view of the market and the millions of batteries in circulation in Europe.
