A study suggests that the holiday season is prone to penile fractures. An injury that can be avoided or at least well treated.

According to a study carried out in Germany and published in the British Journal of Urology International, This period is indeed conducive to penile fractures.

Penile fracture: a higher incidence at Christmas
Nikolaos Pyrgides, from the department of urology at the Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich, explains that these fractures are manifested by a loud cracking sound followed by intense pain, a sudden cessation of the erection, swelling and bruising. The patients’ penis then resembles an eggplant. It is absolutely necessary to be hospitalized and in 25% of cases, there is an injury to the urethra, which can cause serious complications. It comes from forced flexion of the erect penis, performing an unusual position, such as reverse cowgirl, where there is no direct eye contact between partners, or during intercourse in inappropriate places.
The researchers studied 3,421 patients aged around 42 who suffered a penile fracture between 2005 and 2021. Their analysis confirmed their intuition: there were more injuries on Christmas days. In total, 40 took place during the 51 days between December 24 and 26 from 2005 to 2021. An incidence which goes from 0.54 in normal times to 0.78 during this period. “If every day was like Christmas, there would have been 43% more penile fractures in Germany”, summarizes the article. The study is, however, limited, covering only one country and over a rather short period.
