This is one of Dwayne Johnson’s biggest commercial failures: is a sequel planned?

Broadcast this evening on M6, this blockbuster with Dwayne Johnson, which was a bitter failure in 2021, will there be a sequel?

In July 2021, Jungle Cruise landed in dark rooms, carried by an unprecedented and explosive duo, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. The actress played an intrepid researcher, Lily Houghton. The plot of the film follows her as she leaves London to explore the Amazon jungle in search of a miraculous cure.

To go down the river, she hires Frank Wolff (The Rock), a cunning captain as dubious as his dilapidated old tub. Determined to discover the age-old tree whose extraordinary healing powers could change the future of medicine, Lily embarks on an epic quest.

The improbable duo will then face countless dangers – not to mention supernatural forces – hidden under the lush splendor of the rainforest. As the secrets of the Lost Tree slowly come to light, the stakes grow even higher for Lily and Frank. It is not only their fate that is at stake, but that of all of humanity.

Jungle Cruise, adapted from the famous attraction of the Disney parks, was shot with a substantial budget of 200 million dollars. If its start was rather correct at the time of its release, attendance collapsed thereafter.

THE CRUISE INFUSES

The work was a commercial failure, ending its operation at 220 million tickets collected. Its simultaneous release on Disney + did not help matters at the time.

In August 2021, this did not prevent the studio from announcing, perhaps a little too early, a sequel project. To date, Jungle Cruise 2 is still announced in development on the side of the IMDb websitewith Jaume Collet-Serra at the controls, like the 1st opus.

However, we haven’t heard from the project for 2 years. Moreover, after a new commercial failure with Black Adam (also directed by Collet-Serra), Dwayne Johnson seems on the tightrope in Hollywood. To pick up the slack at the box office, The Rock recently agreed to return to the Fast and Furious franchise, getting a solo spin-off about his character, Luke Hobbs.

The latter will therefore be very busy and Jungle Cruise no longer seems a priority for him, as for Disney. It is therefore unlikely that the sequel will see the light of day in the near future. She can even stay in Mickey’s desk drawer for a very long time without ever getting out.
