This is what the iPhone 14’s “Always On” mode will look like

Android smartphones have had an always-on display for years now. And as we approach the time when Apple typically announces its new iPhone models, rumors – and evidence – that the iPhone 14 will have an “Always On” mode are gaining traction.

For those who don’t know, an always-on display continues to show information and data – like the time or notifications – on the screen, even when the smartphone is locked. To date, when an iPhone is locked, the screen is completely off.

With the release of iOS 16 beta 4, 9to5Mac discovered references to a new sleep mode that saves battery power and makes the screen barely visible. It’s a very similar approach to what Apple is already doing on the Apple Watch, but rumors indicate that this feature will be limited to the iPhone 14 Pro and not entry-level models.

The screenshot above shows a standby wallpaper. 9to5Mac even made a video showing what the iconic clownfish wallpaper might look like going from active to sleep mode (you can find the video here). The only thing missing is the clock and notifications, which I assume will be available on a real device and not the demo that the 9to5Mac team made.

Personally, I can’t wait for the iPhone to have finally an always-on screen. This is one of my favorite features on all Android smartphones, as it allows me to always see which notifications are waiting for me (or not).
