This Friday, January 19, Sony launched a new “Remastered” version of The Last of Us Part II on PS5.
In September 2022, Sony offered PS5 players a complete overhaul of the first The Last of Us, initially launched on PlayStation 3 in 2013. At the start of 2024, it is its sequel which is being ported to PS5. However, unlike the first opus here, no remake, but a “Remastered” version which it would perhaps have been more judicious to call “Director’s Cut”.

Indeed, no graphic redesign for this The Last of Us Part II Remastered, but some subtle developments such as a new 4K mode, optimized loadings or even (very) complete support for the DualSense controller. To the eye, the game therefore remains generally the same as that launched on PS4 in 2020.
This PS5 version also includes a new No Return game mode, as well as a Free Guitar mode, a documentary, without forgetting the Lost Levels, portions of the game that were not integrated into the final game, and that the you can browse here, with the added bonus of comments from the developers.
A version more complete than ever, “director’s cut” style, displayed at the price of €49.99 on PlayStation 5. However, owners of the base game (on PS4) can claim a ” upgrade », against only €10.
Some players lost over PS5 “upgrades”
However, faced with marketing elements that are relatively incomprehensible to some players, many have pre-ordered this new The Last of Us Part II Remastered at a high price on the PS Store…. even though the PS4 version is in their possession.
Also, Sony has decided to react, by automatically refunding eligible players for the PS5 upgrade of the game. As an owner of the PS4 digital version of The Last of Us Part II, you can enjoy a PS5 digital upgrade of the game. A gesture that is commendable to say the least on the part of the Japanese giant, but which nevertheless still demonstrates a serious lack of clarity regarding the “ upgrades » games, sometimes free, sometimes paid…
Not counting (we remind you) a The Last of Us Part II Remastered which in no way constitutes a complete remake, unlike The Last of Uslaunched in 2022.
The Last of Us was released 7 years ago. Almost to the day. It was released 7 years ago and, yet, Naughty Dog’s license already has its place in the video game pantheon. This is because the title, which marked the end of the PlayStation 3 era, helped to break down a certain number of narrative barriers in the medium. A work of decomplexion already well underway in the sphere of independent games but which, with The Last of Us, has infused itself into the blockbuster. Let’s not be afraid of words: there was a before and an after The Last of Us.
