In a relatively discreet manner, Qualcomm announced its new Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 a few days ago. This mid-range chip, engraved in 4 nm, aims to fill a blind spot in the American manufacturer’s offering: the “low” of its mid-range.
While its competitor MediaTek is pushing very hard on the high end after having invested massively in the field of accessible chips, Qualcomm seems to be adopting the opposite approach. Very solidly positioned in the premium segment, with its inevitable Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 (and soon Gen 3), the American mobile chip designer announced during the weekend a new SoC designed to strengthen its positions, but this time in its mid-range. range.
The Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, this is the name of this new SoC, seeks to meet the expectations of smartphone manufacturers wanting honorable performance… for a restricted budget, significantly lower than that required to hire the services of a Snapdragon 8 series.
A more modest chip, but good value for money?
As its nomenclature suggests, this new “S” chip is less efficient than the “classic” Snapdragon 7 series. Its CPU is slower, and its ISP less impressive. We thus find an 8-core CPU, bringing together 4 high-performance cores clocked at 2.4 GHz and 4 high-efficiency cores at 1.95 GHz. This CPU part can rely on support for LPDDR5 RAM at 3200 MHz.
For the moment, Qualcomm does not yet give details on the graphics part integrated into its chip, but it is an Adreno iGPU capable of supporting up to a Full HD + screen at 144 Hz.
This new Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 is also satisfied with the FastConnect 6700 platform (inferior to the FastConnect 6900 available on the Snapdragon 7+ Gen 2). There is a maximum download speed of 2.9 Gbps, while supported Bluetooth is capped at version 5.2. Low-power audio is, however, supported, as GSMArena points out.
On the photo front, Qualcomm is banking on a Spectra ISP capable of managing up to 200 Mpx and recording in 4K at 30 FPS. For the rest, we note support for USB-C 3.1 and the Quick Charge 4+ standard.
As for the launch of this Snapdragon 7s Gen 2, some rumors place it very soon, with the arrival of the Redmi Note 13. Qualcomm, however, has not made anything official at this stage.
