SEGA had promised a new direction for sonicand it certainly wasn’t what fans expected.

In a free game on PC and Mac that looked like an April Fool’s joke, but is actually very serious, we must investigate the circumstances of the death of the famous blue hedgehog.

Oh my god, they killed Sonic! »

It was a day of jubilation aboard the Mirage Express as Amy Rose celebrated her birthday. What was this terrible surprise when his dear and tender Sonic was found lifeless on the ground!

This synopsis, which looked like an early April Fool’s joke, has thus taken the form of a real investigation game, available for free on Steam (and of course Steam Deck) and Mac since March 31.

Instead of the classic platform style to which the franchise has accustomed us, The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog therefore takes the form of an investigation game point and click. We embody his best friend Tails, who will have to interrogate many well-known characters from the universe and search the Mirage Express in order to find out who killed Pamela Ro… uh, Sonic.

A new frontier for licensing?

Fans seem to have taken Sonic’s death pretty well. At the time of writing, this new free game has indeed collected 9,344 reviews on Steam, 98% of which are positive, allowing it to claim the highly prized label of “extremely positive” reviews.

What give ideas to SEGA to diversify the license, while the recent Sonic Frontiers, a nice game but with an open world that could be improved, did not receive so much unanimous support. That the fans of the blue hedgehog are reassured, the Japanese firm is certainly not ready to put its mascot in the closet.

However, the success of this little free game could well mark a turning point and the search for new avenues. Ironically, the license has lost momentum since its transition to 3D. However, there are some exceptions, such as the series Sonic Adventures to undisputed success and which has not yet been equaled in this field since the release of the second opus in… 2001.
