We now know a little more, through official channels, about the future Snapdragon 8 Gen 4. Expected next October, Qualcomm’s new SoC will have “Oryon” CPU cores this year… theoretically capable of deliver a substantial leap forward in performance.
Through a short video shared on The company’s range would arrive in October 2024… and that it could also count on “Oryon” CPU cores.
These new cores, designed largely by Nuvia, acquired by Qualcomm in 2021, began their career last year on Qualcomm processors dedicated to Windows laptops. We therefore learn that they will also arrive this year on smartphones. With them, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 could take a notable leap forward in performance.
The more powerful Snapdragon 8 Gen 4… but also more expensive?
Note that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 will also have the advantage of offering better connectivity, in particular through the integration of the FastConnect 7900 suite, announced a few days ago by Qualcomm. The latter has the particular advantage of offering integrated UWB capabilities. Clearly, thanks to Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, more high-end smartphones should be able to display Ultra Wideband support at the end of 2024 and during 2025.
The other side of the coin, because there would be one, would be to be found in the price placement of this new Snapdragon. These various new features may indeed push Qualcomm to further increase the price of its future chip. This situation could, ultimately, benefit the competition, and in particular the Taiwanese MediaTek, increasingly present in the mid- and high-end segments with its various Dimensity chips.
For context, and according to certain sources, the price of the current Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has already increased by around 25% compared to that of its predecessor. A dynamic which could therefore assert itself even more with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4.
