To acquire a quality red wine, you don’t necessarily have to open your wallet wide. In any case, this is the observation made by “60 million consumers” by analyzing thirty red wines.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Syrah, Cinsault, Carignan… In France there are a multitude of grape varieties giving quality red wines. However, in store, it is sometimes difficult to find your way around when faced with the vast choice. Between appellation wines, IGP, French wines, those meeting the criteria of organic farming, sustainable farming, biodynamics and even natural wines, there is something to be dizzying about!
To choose the good bottle of red, some are tempted to also look at the price. So, is an expensive wine necessarily better thancheap wine? Nay! In its latest issue, 60 million consumers presented the analysis of a jury of connoisseurs who blind tasted thirty red wines , including fifteen Loire wines and fifteen Beaujolais. Verdict: two bottles for less than 8 euros stood out.

A Beaujolais-Villages praised by the jury
The wine merchants, consultants and master sommeliers who agreed to decipher said red wines for 60 million consumers therefore initially welcomed a Beaujolais-Villages of 2020 from Domaine de la Croix de Montmerond, located in Denicé in the south of Beaujolais. With a score of 14.5 out of 20, this wine sold at Lidl at the price of €4.28 thus attracted the experts.
This Beaujolais-Villages presents an interesting nose – “cherry with kirch, nuts, black tea, mineral” – as well asa rich palace : “fresh, elegant, long palate, crunchy tannins, melted fruit.” Note also that this domain exploits “in a reasoned manner, in order to preserve the land and the environment” and is “in conversion to organic farming”, as indicated on its official site.

Good value for money for this Chiroubles
Experts also praised the bottle of Chiroubles J. Thorin Land of Granites2022, sold at Intermarché at €7.74 , with the same score of 14.5 out of 20. On the nose: fresh grapes, blackberries, graphite, licorice. In the mouth: a balanced wine, velvety and harmonious sensations with an aromatic finish.
“Chiroubles confirm their reputation for fresh and fine wines – this Beaujolais cru is favored, in this regard, by the higher altitude position (up to 600 m) than the others”, analyzed our colleagues. On its official website, the J. Thorin house also gave some advice for consume this quality wine as best as possible: “It will go perfectly with a platter of charcuterie, raw or parsley ham, roast poultry. Best enjoyed between 15 and 16°C.”
