According to a Chinese study, a certain type of drink could lead to premature baldness in men.

In France, about 70% of men suffer from more or less extensive baldness. If it is no longer as shameful as it may have been a few years ago, few are those who hope to go bald. Baldness is all the more unpleasant when it happens early, before the age of fifty. The causes of baldness are poorly understood, but it is often genetic and hormonal. It corresponds to an acceleration of the life cycle of the scalp which will therefore “exhaust” until it produces only a fine down.

But some external causes are suspected to promote the appearance of baldness. Among them, stress, but also bad eating habits. A team of Chinese researchers has looked at the impact that a particular food group could have. They noted a correlation between heavy consumption of sugary drinks and early hair loss.

Data to be confirmed

Scientists from Tsinghua University in Beijing interviewed more than a thousand men aged 18 to 45, who did not suffer from hair infections or cancer and who had a habit of drinking sugary drinks more or less regular. They observed that a high consumption of sugary drinks was associated with a greater chance of suffering from baldness. However, this correlation does not make it possible to affirm that there is a link of cause and effect.

The researchers themselves specify that the relatively small size of the sample or the fact that the study is based on declarations limits its impact. He also notes that often a large consumption of soda may be associated with other poor eating habits. It is therefore in line with previous work which evoked the role of diet and in particular of cholesterol as a possible aggravating factor. Further studies will therefore be necessary.
