Frédéric de Lanouvelle and his daughter Mathilde, broke the world record for the longest GPS drawing on a bicycle. Thanks to the application Strava (and their muscles), they drew a giant heart while traveling across France in tandem.
Strava is one of the most popular sports apps, almost essential for athletes with a slightly geeky mind. Amateurs or professionals, it is possible to find interest in a large number of sports. During the summer of 2023, this father and his young daughter managed to cover 2,160 km in tandem, while drawing a superb heart on the French map thanks to the application’s geolocation system. A challenge put at the service of a noble cause.
Strava: a real digital assistant for athletes
Strava, created in 2009, is both a website and a mobile application totally dedicated to athletes. It allows its users to evaluate and monitor their performance in numerous activities: running, road cycling, mountain biking, swimming or winter sports. It is possible to remember all your activity with great precision.
The application also includes a strong community component, a bit like a social network. Communities around sports practices are formed, seasonal challenges are launched and registered people can share their activities and interact with each other. Which makes it a rather complete digital space.
An atypical family feat
Fredéric de Lanouvelle, ex-journalist and former spokesperson for the Minister of the Interior, accompanied by his 16-year-old daughter Mathilde, took on a rather exceptional challenge. They covered 2,162.31 km in the summer of 2023, in just 16 days, on a tandem. Starting from Lyon, they traced a route in the shape of a huge heart, which you can admire in the screenshot below. A long journey, carried out for the benefit of the Mécénat surgical cardiac association.
A performance which allowed them to beat the world record for the largest GPS drawing made on a bicycle. The tandem was also awarded the nomination “artists of the year” as part ofs Strava Year In Sport Awards 2023. A very good performance congratulated by more than 120 million Strava users.
