Contactless payment is about to be improved. The NFC forum, the organization that standardizes contactless technology between the various manufacturers, published its roadmap on Thursday, June 22. Three major changes are expected and will be in place by 2028according to the NFC Forum.
The first concerns contactless payment distance will pass 5mm 3cm within two years. Which seems little but will ultimately give more meaning to the term contactless payment. An improvement that should reduce the number of payment failures.
Another evolution to come: the transformation of any smartphone into a payment terminal, for a refund between friends or to settle a transaction between individuals. Like Apple’s Tap to Pay, it will be possible to pay directly from one smartphone to another, even with an Android phone.
The implementation of the multiple purpose tap. With a single contactless validation, you will be able to validate your transport tickets for the whole family. You can also scan your loyalty card and pay in one tap at checkout.
Currently, contactless payment by credit card on a payment terminal allows you to pay for purchases up to 50 euros. It is used, according to the Banque de France, for 57% of bank card payments. Contactless payment via mobile uses the same NFC technology: you bring your phone close to the terminal to make a payment. But unlike contactless payment by credit card, it is not subject to the ceiling of 50 euros.
