THE processors Intel have sold better than their AMD and Apple counterparts, but Intel sees a more limited increase in revenue.
Intel is no longer as dominant as it could have been at the beginning of the century, that is an indisputable fact. However fragile it may be, the company’s position is not bad.
The latest report published by Canalys deals with processor shipments over the entire fourth quarter of 2023 and if there is competition from AMD or Apple, it is still far behind.
A slightly increasing global CPU market
Generally speaking, the sector has strengthened with, in the fourth quarter of 2023, sales increasing by 3% year-on-year. However, not everyone benefits from this increase and, above all, not in the same way.
In terms of machine brands, Dell and Lenovo stand out with approximately 25% market share each. HP is not far behind, a good third place at 21% market share. That said, we are more interested in the distribution according to the origin of the processor at the heart of the machines.
It is at this level that we note the broad domination of Intel, which sold more than 50 million processors in the fourth quarter alone when AMD (2nd) and Apple (3rd) are respectively at 8 and 6 million. units.
Intel stronger in number of sales than in revenue
More importantly, Intel is the only one of this trio to progress with +3% over one year when AMD declines slightly (-1%) and Apple declines more significantly (-4%). It should also be noted that the fourth thief (MediaTek) is the only one to increase more clearly (+27%), but it remains so far behind.
These figures are largely favorable to Intel, which must however remain on its guard, because another indicator is less flattering: market shares, no longer in units sold, but in revenues generated. There, Intel remains number one with 41 billion dollars, but AMD (8 billion) and Apple (5 billion) have progressed more over one year.

When Intel only increases its revenues by 2%, Apple’s revenues gain 6% and AMD’s revenues even 8%. The revenues of both competitors are increasing while their sales are declining. In addition, we must not forget that over the last three or four years, AMD’s upward trend is undeniable even if Intel therefore maintains a good hold on the market.
