It’s been more than a year since Thunderbolt 5 first started making headlines. At the time, a small indiscretion told us that compatible cables could offer a monstrous bandwidth of 80 GB / s. Today, Intel confirmed this figure, in a press release officially announcing the arrival of the standard. This means that Thunderbolt 5 cables will be twice as fast as those running Thunderbolt 4, itself 4 times faster than USB 3.
Better still, Intel indicates that the monitors will be able to benefit from a bandwidth of 120 GB/s. This performance will drastically reduce latency for 8K HDR screens, ideal for gamers and creative professions. It does not stop there: the manufacturer has also promised SSDs twice as fast, intended for gaming laptops. However, you will have to change the boxes to take advantage of it.
Thunderbolt 5 performance is mind-boggling
In other good news, Thunderbolt 5 cables will support the recently announced DisplayPort 2.1 standard, which will also improve throughput on longer cables. “Intel has always been the pioneer and industry leader in wired connectivity solutions, and Thunderbolt is now the mainstream port on mobile PCs and integrated into three generations of Intel mobile CPUs”said Jason Ziller, general manager of client connectivity at Intel.
