TikTok quietly added a “fast forward” option, and it’s a game changer

TikTok has become an extremely popular social media app thanks to its very short, highly addictive video content. However, over time, TikTok videos have become longer and longer, with some of them even reaching ten minutes. If you don’t want to watch long videos, TikTok has a solution.

While I was doing my daily “doom-scrolling” on TikTok, I accidentally clicked on my screen and triggered a “2X” speed icon that sped up my video. When I tried to do the same move again, I realized that TikTok had quietly implemented playback speed control. To activate the 2X play button, simply press and hold the bottom left corner of your screen. As soon as you do this, the 2X symbol will appear and play your video twice as fast.

In the video below I explain how to use this feature.

You can still listen to the audio from the video, but at a faster speed

Unlike the erase button that allowed you to move from one video to another, with the play button you don’t need to miss parts of the video to skip through it. Instead, you can still listen to the audio from the video, but at a faster speed.

This feature is particularly useful for creator stories that take too long to get to the point.

TikTok has yet to officially reveal this feature and makes no mention of it in its recent release history, which states that the September updates only “fixed bugs for a better experience” and added a way to “quickly find and tag your friends in the comments”. Even though TikTok hasn’t announced this feature, if you find that you don’t have access to it, download the most recent version of TikTok.
