Titanic: the slightly selfish reason why James Cameron directed the film

Why did James Cameron REALLY direct ‘Titanic’? In an interview dating from the release of the first “Avatar”, the Canadian filmmaker delivered an astonishing answer.

With Titanic, the 11-Oscar classic worn by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, director James Cameron has become the “king of the world”. While the film has just been broadcast on TF1, we reveal to you why the Canadian embarked on this pharaonic project. A visceral desire to tell the story of this shipwreck and this incredible love story between Jack and Rose? Not really…

In an interview granted to Playboy magazine a few years ago, on the occasion of the release of the first Avatar, the filmmaker revealed that the main reason for which he had agreed to direct Titanic was to satisfy an old dream: that of dive into the sea to visit the wreck of the famous ocean liner.

“I made Titanic because I wanted to dive into the wreckage, not because I particularly wanted to make the film”said Cameron. “Titanic was the Everest of shipwrecks, and as a diver I wanted to do this right. When I heard that other guys had dived to Titanic to make an IMAX movie, I thought, ‘I’m going to do a Hollywood movie to pay me an expedition and do the same.’ I loved tasting that, and I wanted more.

This more, it will be in particular the story between Jack and Rose. “(…)… I wondered if we could not integrate into a film what we now know about what happened that night and create a story that would go back and forth between present and past”told Cameron in the number 250 of the magazine Première.

“I also wanted to tell a love story”continued the filmmaker at the microphone of our colleagues. “I had tried in Abyss, but without putting the love story before the science fiction story. When those two ideas came together, everything seemed to fall into place.”

James Cameron is back at the top of the news with the theatrical release of Avatar: The Way of the Water on December 14th.
