Tobey Maguire: Did he quit acting?

Tobey Maguire once celebrated great success as a "Spider-Man". He turns 45 today. But what does the actor actually do?

It is still one of the most famous film kisses of all time. In "Spider-Man" (2002) US actor Tobey Maguire (45) in the role of the spider-man rappels head-on in front of colleague Kirsten Dunst (38, "Marie Antoinette") and kisses her passionately in the pouring rain. After filming for the third part of the comic film series ended, however, it became quiet around 2007 by the native Californian. Finally, his poker passion caused a sensation, which made Maguire himself a film character in 2017. Today, Saturday (June 27), he is celebrating his 45th birthday.

Unusual "appearance" in "Molly's Game"

The film is called "Molly's Game – All on one card", in which Tobey Maguire appeared involuntarily in 2017. He does not appear as an actor, but as a film character called "Player X", played by Michael Cera (32, "Superbad"). The bio with Jessica Chastain (43, "Zero Dark Thirty") in the leading role tells the story of Molly Bloom (42), a young woman who, after moving to Los Angeles, organized highly exclusive poker games for Hollywood's super-rich – including the actor Ben Affleck (47, "Good Will Hunting"), Matt Damon (49, "Jason Bourne") and Tobey Maguire.

In the film and in the book template, the autobiography "Molly's Game: The inside report on the poker game of the stars", the father of two does not get away very well. His passion for gambling obviously made him rude, as Molly Bloom told People magazine in an interview in 2014 when her memoirs were published. Maguire, who regularly participated in high-stakes poker games, "gave the worst tip, was the best player and by far the worst loser," she said at the time.

Tobey Maguire's personal life

Tobey Maguire has been a close friend of Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio (45, "Titanic") for many years. Together with actor Lukas Haas (44) and "Entourage" star Kevin Connolly (46), the two formed an illustrious group of men who used to like to rave about it. But these times should be over now.

In 2003 Tobey Maguire met the jewelry designer Jennifer Meyer (43). The couple became engaged in 2006. In the same year their first child, a daughter, was born. They finally married in 2007. Their son was born in 2009. In 2016, the couple surprisingly announced their split. The divorce occurred in 2017, but no bad blood flowed between the two. Meyer said in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter in 2017 about her ex-husband: "I don't know what I would do without him – Tobey is my best friend."

Will Tobey Maguire return to the cinema soon?

From a professional point of view, his last major successes were several years ago. Since the three "Spider-Man" films (2002, 2004, 2007), he has only taken on a few roles. With the drama "Brothers. Two Brothers. One Love" (2009) he dusted off his only Golden Globe nomination in 2010. In the film adaptation of "The Great Gatsby" (2012) by director Baz Luhrmann (57), Maguire played alongside Leonardo DiCaprio the writer and narrator of the plot, Nick Carraway. This was followed by appearances in the film "Labor Day" (2013), the TV series "The Spoils of Babylon" (2014) and the drama "Bauernopfer – Spiel der Könige" (2014).

Maguire seems to have shifted his main focus behind the camera. In 2016, for example, he produced "The 5th Wave" with Chloë Grace Moretz (23) in the leading role. He also co-produced the Amazon film "Brittany Runs A Marathon" (2019). According to "IMDb", further projects as producers are in the pipeline, such as the film "Babylon". In the film by director Damien Chazelle (35, "La La Land"), which was announced in 2021 in the USA, Tobey Maguire could also be seen on camera again for the first time in a long time – alongside Brad Pitt (56) and Emma Stone (31 ). At least a corresponding message is bubbling in Hollywood's rumor mill.
