Sylvester Stallone is considered an absolute icon of the 70s and 80s. In 1976 he created a film about an outsider pursuing his dream, which became a successful film series: “Rocky.” Similar to the main character, Stallone went from unknown to absolute icon with his script and acting.
“Rocky” was also the first sports film to win an Oscar for Best Picture. The best direction and best editing were also awarded. Stallone received several nominations, but always came away empty-handed – unlike the Golden Raspberry Awards, where Stallone takes home an award almost every year.
From underdog to winner
Amateur boxer Rocky Balboa takes on world heavyweight boxing champion Apollo Creed after he was asked to fill in for another candidate at short notice. This fight is the chance of a lifetime for Rocky. Within a very short time he has to prepare for the fight and win the prize money of 150,000 US dollars.
Sylvester Stallone (“The Expendables”) achieved his international breakthrough not only as an actor but also as a screenwriter in his role as Rocky Balboa. Carl Weathers (“Predator”) plays Apollo Creed and Thalia Shire (“The Godfather”) takes on the role of Adrian.
The world famous Rocky series
The “Rocky” series produced a total of six parts between 1976 and 2006 with Sylvester Stallone in the lead role. In 2015, “Creed – Rocky’s Legacy” was the start of a three-part spin-off, in which Michael B. Jordan (“Black Panther”) took on the leading role. Sylvester Stallone returned as Rocky in two of the films.
