TOKYO (Reuters) – Japan was hit by scorching temperatures for a fourth consecutive day on Tuesday, as the capital Tokyo experienced heat records the highest in nearly 150 years and authorities warned that energy reserves were insufficient. reduced for fear of cuts.

Up to 36 degrees Celsius are expected in Tokyo on Tuesday, after three days in a row marked by temperatures having exceeded 35 degrees – an unprecedented series in June since these data are listed, i.e. 1875.

For the second day in a row, authorities have asked residents of the Tokyo area to reduce their electricity consumption in order to avoid a widespread blackout.

This heat wave comes less than two weeks before national elections for which the rise in the cost of living – including the price of electricity – is considered one of the priorities of voters, against a backdrop of a decline in the government popularity.
