Tom Hiddleston and Jake Gyllenhaal: Hollywood Stars nominated at the 2020 Tony Awards

Who will get the "Theater Oscar"? Tom Hiddleston and Jake Gyllenhaal are competing for the Tony Award for best theater actor.

The Tony Awards are to the theater industry what the Oscars are to filmmakers – the highest possible award. Hollywood stars can also raise their hopes at the 74th edition of the Tony Awards, which this year will take place virtually due to Corona. Both Jake Gyllenhaal (39) and Tom Hiddleston (39, "Only Lovers Left Alive") are each nominated for best actor in a play, as can be read on the official website of the event.

Gyllenhaal is nominated for the play "Sea Wall / A Life", Hiddleston for "Betrayal". There are four other actors to choose from in this category: Tom Sturridge for "Sea Wall / A Life", Andrew Burnap for "The Inheritance", Ian Barford for "Linda Vista" and Blair Underwood for "A Soldier's Play".

Still no fixed date

Among the women are Joaquina Kalukango ("Slave Play"), Laura Linney ("My Name Is Lucy Barton"), Audra McDonald ("Frankie and Johnny in the Clair De Lune") and Mary-Louise Parker ("The Sound Inside") ) in the race. With a total of twelve nominations, "Slave Play" tops the list for theater plays, and "Jagged Little Pill" with 15 nominations for musicals. The piece is inspired by the successful album of the same name by the Canadian-American singer Alanis Morissette (46).

This year's award ceremony should actually have taken place on June 7th. However, due to the corona pandemic, it has been postponed until further notice. The exact date of the virtual edition of the event has not yet been set, but according to the operators it will definitely take place in 2020. An appointment in autumn or winter is mentioned on the website.
