Produced by Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis, two beginners who are, it seems, very gifted in the art of the great spectacle that does good, Real Steel, adaptation of the short story by Richard Matheson (I Am Legend), is a very high quality family sci-fi film. It’s funny, moving, really endearing and this idea of boxing robots is still really cool! The fight scenes are also impressive, which makes this film a high-class entertainment.
Steven Spielberg is fully aware of the latest technological advances in special effects. However, the producer’s only advice to director Shawn Levy was precisely to avoid everything digital. “When working with these tools, there is practically nothing on set in front of the actors”declares Spielberg. “They must then act and react in the face of emptiness. If, on the other hand, the actor is confronted with a real physical representation of the object, he can interact with it, touch it, look it in the eyes, and his interpretation then takes on its full potential. strength.”
With “Avatar” technology and a boxing legend!
To animate the robots Real Steeldirector Shawn Levy used technology from the film Avatar. The movements of the fights were thus recorded with the help of real boxers, then this information was transmitted to a computer and finally to a camera which reintegrated the movements on the film set.
Even if Hugh Jackman is not directly involved in the boxing scenes, his character as a former boxer required a good knowledge of the sport. To train him, the producers simply decided to call on the American Sugar Ray Leonard, one of the greatest boxers in history. The latter became a consultant for each of Jackman’s movements, in addition to the choreographies specific to the clashes between the robots!
