The story takes place in 1968. Mike, Steven, Nick, Stan and Axel work in the steel mill in the town of Clairton, Pennsylvania, and form a tightly knit little band. But their tranquility is overtaken by the Vietnam War when three of them are mobilized to go into battle…
Second feature film by Michael Cimino, Journey to the End of Hell is the only one in his filmography to be recognized as an undeniable success upon its release in 1978. Awarded the Oscar for Best Film, this poignant and captivating fresco punctuated by unforgettable scenes (deer hunting, Russian roulette, among others ) is a true monument of the 7th art.
In addition to the power of its staging, Journey to the End of Hell is based on the masterful interpretation of its actors: Robert De Niro, who lives up to his reputation as a perfectionist by living intimately in the small town of Clairton six weeks before filming; John Cazale in his last film role; but also a whole new generation of actors, from John Savage to Meryl Streep, via Christopher Walken, crowned with the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.
