After his television debut, Leonardo DiCaprio began to break into the cinema in the mid-1990s, when he was not yet twenty years old. His composition of a mentally ill boy in Gilbert Grape, where he notably stole the show from Johnny Depp, earned him an Oscar nomination in the Best Supporting Actor category.
At ease in all registers, this gifted man went on to film, before achieving star status between 1996 and 1997 thanks to his roles as a romantic hero in Romeo + Juliet, then Titanic.
Leonardo DiCaprio now arouses the interest of great directors, who entrust him with more mature roles. Steven Spielberg offers him that of a crook in Catch Me If You Can, while Martin Scorsese finds in him his favorite actor.
After directing him on Gangs of New York, he collaborated again with him on Aviator. Leonardo DiCaprio lends his features to Howard Hughes, eccentric and flamboyant adventurer who became a leader in the aeronautics industry at the same time as a mythical figure haloed with glamor and mystery.
At its output, Airman is generally appreciated by the press, but it is above all the performance of the young actor that marks the spirits. Among the film’s eleven Oscar nominations, Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Actor. But the statuette is won by Jamie Foxx for his performance in the biopic Ray.
Leonardo DiCaprio will have to wait another twelve years to win the prestigious award, thanks to his anthology performance in the shoes of a trapper in the western The Revenant.
