Tonight on TV: Omar Sy facing Tom Hanks

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones and Omar Sy in Dante’s Inferno.

Sony Pictures

In 2011, Omar Sy was awarded the César for Best Actor for his performance in Intouchables, in which he starred alongside François Cluzet. The success of the film at the French box office (more than 19 million admissions!) opened the doors to Hollywood for him. Now residing in Los Angeles, the “favorite personality of the French” (according to an IFOP poll for the Sunday newspaper in August 2016) joins the cast of American blockbusters such as X-Men: Days of Future Past, Jurassic World and Infernos.

Third part of the film saga of the adventures of Professor Robert Langdon, still played by Tom Hanks, and directed by Ron Howard, Infernos is a faithful adaptation of the homonymous novel by Dan Brown. The story takes us to the colorful alleys of Florence to investigate one of the most famous and mysterious works of literature: Dante’s “Inferno”.

Accustomed to working with international actors, filmmaker Ron Howard said he learned a lot from Omar Sy: “He speaks very good English, but getting to play in English is really something different. (…) Omar was very subtle about this, and he made sure to translate not only the words but also the intention from one language to another. It was very interesting as a director.

Omar Sy is not the first French actor to join the saga, since Audrey Tautou, Jean Reno and Jean-Pierre Marielle also held key roles in Da Vinci Code, where we also met Denis Podalydès.
