Tonight on TV: One of New Hollywood’s Best Movies

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: Sydney Pollack and Robert Redford’s fourth collaboration.

Released in 1975, The Three Days of the Condor is one of the flagship films of New Hollywood. This American cinematographic movement, largely influenced by European modernity (French New Wave and Italian neorealism), is characterized in particular by the radical representation of themes hitherto taboo, such as the corruption of political powers, sexuality and violence.

Adapted from James Grady’s novel “The Six Days of the Condor”, whose plot was slightly modified by screenwriters David Rayfield and Lorenzo Semple, Jr. to reinforce its political aspect, the feature film is in line with thrillers Because of an Assassination and Secret Conversation, reflecting the climate of paranoia caused by the Watergate scandal in the United States.

Behind the camera, Sydney Pollack directs, for their fourth collaboration, Robert Redford in the main role. The latter thus slips into the skin of Joseph Turner, a secret agent responsible for finding leaks in the methods of the CIA, soon faced with the assassination of all his colleagues. In his race against time to shed light on this tragedy, he meets Kathy Hale (Faye Dunaway), a freelance photographer who agrees to help him in his investigation…

The Three Days of the Condor by Sydney Pollack with Robert Redford, Faye Dunaway, Max von Sydow…
