Tonight on TV: One of the best horror movies of the 2010s

Every day, AlloCiné recommends a film to (re)watch on TV. Tonight: a horror thriller by Jordan Peele.

Best known for being one of the two members of the comedy duo of the comedy series Key and Peele, Jordan Peele is moving towards another register by moving to directing in 2017 with his first horror feature film, Get Out .

Inspired by a sketch by Eddie Murphy – in which the actor recounted his meeting with his white in-laws – and the classic Night of the Living Dead, he invents the story of Chris, a young black photographer, who meets his beautiful -family during a weekend where a series of increasingly disturbing incidents allows him to discover the unimaginable…

This low-budget film – around $4.5 million – follows in the line of previous horror and thriller films produced by Jason Blum, through his company Blumhouse Productions, such as the very lucrative Ouija, Paranormal Activity, Insidious or even American Nightmare. Here, Jordan Peele draws from the fantastic, the political and paranoid thriller of the 1970s and even from humor to plunge the viewer into a more real-than-life nightmare against a backdrop of racism.

A real surprise success when it was released in theaters (255 million worldwide receipts), Get Out managed, in record time, to create a cult film status. Considered one of Hollywood’s most prominent directors, Jordan Peele notably becomes the first African-American screenwriter to win the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay. It should be noted that in France, Get Out reached the symbolic bar of one million admissions after a month of exploitation, which is quite rare for a horror film in France.
